The next step is the Pink Class. At this level, the child is a little older and his mind has developed even more. While still following the Montessori method of 4 distinct sections (Practical, Sensorial, Math & Language), what is covered in these different sections has changed. Here the child learns the ‘how’s’ & ‘why’s’ of washing hands, brushing teeth and table manners.
Also covered here are refinement of the fine motor skills through holding trays, spooning into three bowls, pouring water and opening and closing buttons.
In this class the child will work with knob cylinders, color tablets, geometric solids, touch boards and the sound box. Each piece of material has one isolating quality – color, weight, size, shape, texture, sound and smell.
Regarding math, the children will work with number rods, counters & cards, spindle boxes, units of numbers in the tens, hundreds and thousands and the short bead stairs.
Under the language category, the children are proceeding naturally towards the development of skills for reading and writing. They will work with vocabulary cards, movable alphabets, three letter words, vowels & consonants.
In this area, exercises are designed to help the child develop his/her skills in health and hygiene, coordination movement, self confidence and discipline. The children are exposed to such activities as:
The Sensorial material allows the child to understand his environment through his senses. Each piece of material has one isolating quality such as color, weight, size, shape, texture, sound and smell. The exercises include:
The child is introduced to Math through the use of concrete to abstract. The following are the exercises in which the child learns the quantities and matching abstract symbols:
Many activities are designed to proceed naturally towards the development of skills for reading and writing. The child first learns the phonetic sounds of the letters which leads to building short phonetic words. The following exercises are included in language:
The children are introduced to cultural subjects which includes history, science, music and arts.
